Lost Horizon happened to be his favorite, so he passed his DVD on to me. I think there was something unwholesome about Shangri-La. Without the film, the book might well be a footnote by now–unlike, say, Gone With the Wind or The Godfather, each of which is a brilliant piece of genre fiction. Slowly, Shangri la brings these new things to itself and judges whether they are needed, avoiding the worst of the world’s troubles.

If that happened I would shout and struggle and fight and maybe even kill to get out of there. Hilton’s writing style is very approachable and easy-to-read.
I think that this isn’t a book of high adventure or even any adventure, it is probably what we would term a new age book in modern terms, with all the talk about how one needs to find inner peace and moderation and a long life will be achieved. But no such luck.
It’s just not my thing.
