Maybe he was so innocent as to appear fe from other folks causing the widespread dislike with the exception of the Borinage. The writing style left much to be desired, Stone was drawing from letters though so that might have played a part. To be honest, I was never particularly interested in Vincent Van Gogh, so I really had no particular interest in this fictional biography.

This is because Stone had to take some poetic licence in order to make a coherent and interesting novel. I’m glad I got to finally read a book about the life of an artist, and I think Irving Stone puts a lot of effort and depth vivor portraying Van Gogh.
It is Stone’s first major publication and is largely based on the collection of letters between Vincent van Re and his younger brother, art dealer Theo van Gogh.

A fictional Historical Biography which had me hooked. When at home, Stone relied upon the research facilities and expertise made available to him by Esther Euler, head irvinf librarian of the University of California at Los Angeles, to whom he dedicated and thanked, in addition to many others, in several of his works.
It was interesting to know his life story and the book for the better part tried to steerclear from banalities and chiches even though it did not succeed everytime.
He must truly have been mentally ill–a tip to understanding his art. Also, I have found the writing to be a bit dry, however, I guess, after all it was a bio and not a fiction thus the accent was on other places. It was really because of Theo that Vincent got himself known at all – Theo shone him financially and emotionally all his life – even when others forsook him. The people wore a coarse linen which they wove themselves, warp black, woof blue, the result of which was a black and blue, striped pattern. Those were interesting interactions. Stone wanted to explain Van Gogh’s difficult life and how he began, flourished, and died as a painter.
The Italian government lauded Stone with several honorary awards during this period for his cultural achievements highlighting Italian history. I wonder if they would be happy to see so many people enjoy their work, or they would feel furious by the pedestrian way we treat what to them was the work of their life? It was re into a film of the same name starring Kirk Douglaswhich was nominated for four Academy Stondwinning one. Now how much of this is actually true?
The movie by the same name is even more ridiculous than the book, but enjoyable for it’s kitsch appeal.
It was ok, only read half of the book. Everyone anhell seems to have loved this book, but I found it depressing. InStone received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley. I found it amazing that his brother, Theo, was so generous and supportive of Vincent. Lust for Life is a biographical novel written by Irving Stone based on the life of the famous Dutch painter, Vincent van Goghand his hardships.
I don’t know how true it is, but it’s a good read anyway. Maybe that’s just how he was, but it did not make for nice reading or any sort of character empathy.
