Essential to choice-making are self-respect and self-esteem development, supportive peer relationships, expanded decision-making and negotiating skills, and access to resources. This sourcebook, intended for facilitators and trainers working with girls ages years, is based on the principle that girls have the right and can develop the capabilities to make choices about their futures.

While the curricula promote abstinence as the best choice for young people, contraception, STIs and HIV prevention, and unplanned pregnancy are also discussed. The curricula are articulated around activities such as discussion, reflection and role-play to help participants apply their new knowledge and skills to their own situation. The study objectives were to compare BLP alumni with a similar control group of girls who had not participated in the programme, in terms of educational attainment, income generation, decision-making, mobility, self-esteem, fertility, age at marriage, child-spacing, use of contraceptives and health-seeking behaviours.
